2014-15 Brief Overview – CAL Leadership Institute

: Know Thyself & Introduction to Leadership
Date: September 25-26, 9 am-5 pm
Location: Denver Metro Area

Description: Using the book Strengths Finder 2.0 participants will use their strengths for self-discovery and goal setting. Participants will also explore the relationship between leadership and management, discuss change agents, and ethics in a session hosted by Pat Wagner.

: Mentoring & CAL Conference
Date: October 16-18, 9 am- 5 pm
Location: Loveland Library and Embassy Suites Conference Center, Loveland

Description: The first morning of the CAL conference (October 16) participants will attend a half day session on mentoring. Learn how to maximize the mentor/mentee relationship and have time for an initial meeting with your CALLI mentor.

Description: Participants will explore current trends in leadership by reading two short articles and discussing key themes with a small group during the month. Participants will also be assigned to read a book on leadership for discussion in January.

Description: There are no formal activities planned for December. Participants will use this time to prepare for the January session.

: Leadership Book Discussion
Date: January 22, 10-11:30 am
Location: Webinar

Description: Participants will work in five small groups to share an overview, thoughts and insights on a pre-assigned book on leadership. Book choices may include: Resonant Leadership, Influencer, The Truth about Leadership, and Tribal Leadership.

: Leadership in Motion
Date: February 18, 1-2:30 pm
Location: Webinar

Description: During this interactive session, local library leaders will share their thoughts on leadership qualities including trust, vision, inspiration, and learning from mistakes.

: Advocacy
Date: One day during the week of March 16, 8 am-5 pm
Location: Colorado State Capitol, Denver Public Library

Description: Participants will participate in CAL Legislative Lobby day in the morning followed by a session on advocacy in the afternoon. In addition, participants will choose final project topics and groups.

: Ethics, Self-Awareness
Date: Exact dates to be determined
Location: CSU-Pueblo – in conjunction with the CLiC spring workshop.
Description: Participants will attend the two day CLiC Spring workshop. Sessions topics may include: advocacy, time management, social styles and emotional intelligence. The Saturday session will focus on ethics and be exclusive to CALLI participants. During the afternoon participants will have time for project planning and collaboration.

: Being a Change Agent
Date: May 19, 1-2:30 pm
Location: Webinar
Description: Local library leaders will share their experiences with change management. Participants will be asked to read articles on change management and to develop questions for our online discussion.

: Mid-Point Leadership Check-In
Date: June 15, 10 – 11:30 am
Location: Online
Details: Pat Wagner will host a follow up session with participants. Participants will revisit topics from the first session and how participants are integrating them into their work environments.

: Communication
Date: July 24, 9 am – 5 pm
Location: Denver Metro Area
Description: Communication is a crucial skill for leaders. Participants will explore their own communication style and learn techniques for engaging in healthy discussions both personally and professionally.

: Leadership Presentation Preparation
Description: August will be a working month. Participants will use their time to prepare for their project presentations in September.

: Leadership Project Presentations
Date: Thursday, September 10, 10-11:30 am//Wednesday, September 16, 1:30-3 pm //Tuesday, September 22, 10-11:30am
Location: Online
Details: Participants will work in small groups (2-3 people) to present on a topic of their choice. Each presentation will be 20 minutes in length. Topics will vary and will be chosen at the March session, if not sooner. Past topics have included Power, Politics & Influence, Facilitation, Project Management, Leading from Within, and library marketing. Participants will have the option of choosing to work on a project for a CAL association/division/committee and reporting on their project.

: Looking to the Future
Date: October 14 or 15
Location: Location TBD
Description: During the final session participants will reflect on their experiences over the past year as well as the Institute as a whole. Each participant will present an overview of their experiences as well as future action using the skills and insights they have learned during the Institute.
