CALCON15 Submission Selection Process

The selection process is a lot different this year, and your CALCON committee members are really excited about the changes.  To help you understand the process your program submission will go through, here are our plans for submission selection:

  • Each year we are faced with the question: how can CALCON better target the needs of different types of libraries? This year we are bringing more people to the selection table, and the associations will have more autonomy in selecting programs that will strongly represent the interests of their membership. In April each association president will oversee the review of all the submissions and select eight programs that will target their members. CoPLA, COALA, CASL, and CoASL will provide a total of 24 programs for the conference.
  • Once the association presidents have made their selections, in May the remaining programs will be returned to the pool for the program selection subcommittee to select the remaining programs. This selection subcommittee will consist of no less than eight members of CAL and will represent a wide spectrum of people who provide library services including academic, public, school and special libraries as well as circulation, youth services, technical services, reference staff. Directors to trustees to readers’ advisors. Superman to Batgirl to…well, you get the picture. This subcommittee is formed by the Programming Chair who also supervises the process and coordinates the meetings.

Amy Long, Conference Chair, Jennifer Hendzlik, Programming Chair, and Cherie Ellingson Programming Co-Chair have created the following guidelines for the CALCON14 selection process:

  • The selection process will be blind. This means that program proposals will have the submitter’s name removed and will be evaluated on the strength of the program’s content only. The goal with this is to provide a fair and balanced opportunity for all who submit program submissions.
  • There will be a selection rubric for each selection committee member to use to evaluate each program submission with the same criteria. Again, this will help to make the selection process consistent and provide fair, balanced and objective scoring of the submissions.
  • Finally, once all submissions have been evaluated and selected the Program Committee will notify everyone-regardless of outcome- by June 1st. Feedback will be provided based on the notes from the selection committee.

Colorado is full of library folks that are on the cutting edge of service and push the library world to new heights. We are a diverse and amazing group, and having that diversity represented in the selection process can only strengthen the conference experience as a whole.

We invite you to peruse the CALCON 2014 Program Submission Packet located here:  It is full of up to date information about the conference itself, explanations of the different program tracks as well as contact information should you have any questions. The Best Practices for Presenters section spells out what the selection committee wants to see in your presentation submission.  Tips on working through the process and really pitching your program are provided.

Don’t forget!

Even if you haven’t been selected to present in past years, please, please, please consider contributing a program submission.

We want to hear from YOU!
